The sitter, James William Lowther, 1st Viscount Ullswater became an MP in 1881 and thereafter became the longest serving Speaker of the House of Commons in the twentieth century, between 1905 and 1921.

The Hon. William Lowther bought the Campsea Ashe High House Estate in 1883 and where the family lived until the death of his son James William Lowther, Speaker of the House of Commons 1905-1921, 1st Viscount Ullswater, in 1949.
