Julio Pomar (1926-2018) was a renowned Portuguese artist famous for his expressionist style and his exploration of social and political issues. Born in Lisbon, Pomar studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts and developed a distinctive style that combined elements of Expressionism and Surrealism. His work features a bold use of colour and an energetic brushwork, creating vibrant and emotional images that reflect the intensity of his artistic vision. Throughout his career, he explored a wide range of subjects, from portraits to cityscapes and scenes of everyday life, with a keen sensitivity to social injustices and political tensions. Pomar also dabbled in sculpture and ceramics, displaying his artistic versatility. He is still considered as one of Portugal's most influential artists of the 20th Century.
