Motif from Vite broar, Simrishamn. Oil on canvas, 53.5x55 cm.
Ellen Trotzig (1878-1949) was educated at the end of the 19th century at the Tegne og Konstindustriskolen for women in Copenhagen. This was followed by studies in Gothenburg under Carl Wilhelmson at the Valand Art Academy in the years 1903-1905. In 1907, she traveled to Paris and the Académie Colarossi, where she studied with Christian Krohg. It was during this period that she got to know Tora Vega Holmström, a friendship that became lifelong. Trotzig left Paris for Simrishamn (where she had lived as a child) and lived there for the rest of her life. She became one of the absolute foremost interpreters of Österlen's distinctive landscape.
