HISTORY Endre Nemes was born as Endre Nágel in 1909 in the town of Pécsvárad, a few miles outside the university town of Pécs in Hungary. The parents were of Jewish descent. The family later moved to the northern parts of Hungary, which after 1918 came to belong to Slovakia. These were troubled times which naturally left a mark on the young Endre and which came to mark him for the rest of his life.
Neme's first artistic attempts were made as a newspaper cartoonist at an editorial office in Prague. He was skilled and soon managed to make a living and this was also where the foundation for his artistry was laid. Neme's style was expressionist and he admired artists such as Edvard Munch and Oskar Kokoschka. After starting to paint in oil, he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the fall of 1930. The city was at that time a leading cultural city. Over the years, Nemes became a recognized name in artistic circles and in 1936 he made his debut at the Galérie Dr Feigl. However, life became more difficult, the threat of the Nazis became tangible and Neme's last years in Czechoslovakia were filled with terror. In the fall of 1938, he packed about a hundred watercolours, drawings and gouaches with him and fled north. First he came to Finland, then moved on to Norway before finally coming to Sweden.
In Sweden, Endre Nemes remained for the rest of his life, his first exhibition took place in Stockholm in 1941 and in 1948 he became a Swedish citizen. The artistry developed over the decades and his productivity testifies to a never-ending creative spirit and creativity with a visual language that is unique and multifaceted. Nemes also set the tone as a teacher at Valand's art school for a few years in the 1950s.
