"Waldi" was created by the German designer Otl Aicher, who is also behind the design of the Lufthansa logo. The colors of the Waldi were designed to match the colors of the Olympic rings, but Aicher chose to exclude the colors black and red, related to the Nazi Party. The 1972 Games were to be designed to be an optimistic "Rainbow Games".
