Hugo Schnars-Alquist (1855-1939), Encountering two tall ships at sea, oil on canvas, around 1895, signed 'Schnars-Alquist' lower right, approx. 109 x 173 cm, with frame approx. 126x190 cm.

The well-known Hamburg marine painter Hugo Schnars-Alquist initially taught himself to paint after completing a commercial apprenticeship. He soon became a master student with Hans Gude at the Berlin Art Academy. His own experiences at sea enabled him to depict the sea in all its moods. In 1896 he was appointed professor. From 1898 he was based in Hamburg again. Kaiser Wilhelm II owned paintings by Schnars-Alquist, the Hamburger Kunsthalle and other museums acquired his works.

PROVENANCE: Prominent private collection/Mansion Schleswig-Holstein.

Condition

Isolated superficial abrasions and a few minimal selective retouches, a minimal scratch mark on the lower left edge. Overall in good condition with fresh colors.
