Watercolor Carolus Vocke A detail of the fresco of the Mannheim Palace.
Carolus Vocke grew up in Heilbronn. He went to the art academy in Karlsruhe. There he was the pupil of Walter Georgi (painter), Carl Kornhaas (ceramist) and Georg Schreyögg (sculptor). In 1923 he was made a master student by Adolf Bühler and commissioned to paint the Karlsruhe town hall. In 1939 he painted the Hecht building in Tuttlingen, during which time the monumental mural "Symphony of Technology" was created.
After the Second World War, Vocke moved to Mannheim, where he was commissioned to restore the palace's ceiling paintings, which had been almost completely destroyed by the war. Due to the success of this work, Vocke gained national fame and he was offered further commissions of this kind. Vocke was a master of large formats. He worked on numerous public buildings.
His oil paintings are characterized by the impressionistic, iridescent brushwork. Vocke didn't just want to be seen as a monumental baroque painter, so he made many caricatures that showed the lower and upper middle classes, politics and the military with a lot of humor. Overall dimensions: approx. 74x54cm.
