Constantine the Great or Constantine I (Gaius Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus), born 27 February 272 in Naissus (now Niš in Serbia), died 22 May 337 in Nicomedia (now İzmit in Turkey) was a Roman emperor from the time he was proclaimed Augustus by his troops on July 25, 306 until his death. He was the sole emperor from 324. He is known for allowing Christianity in the Roman Empire, which later in the same century led to Christianity becoming the state religion. He is also known for founding the new capital Constantinople in 325. He was the son of Constantius I Chlorus and Flavia Julia Helena. He is canonized in the Orthodox Church and is considered an apostolic.
