CARL AUGUST BINDER STAMP (8).
2018855. CARL AUGUST BINDER STAMP (8).

Description

Royal Proceedings of the Academy of History and Antiquity of Vitterhets. I-VIII. Stockholm, in the Royal Printing Office, 1789-1808.
8th. 195 x 112 mm. (6), 409; (4), 618; (4), 499, (1); (4), 400; (4), 419, (1); (4), 478, (2); (4), 467, (1); (4), 466 pp. 10 engraved plates, of which 8 fold-out, 1 fold-out printed table. Red near-contemporary saffian bindings with richly gilt spines with green leather title labels and number mirrors, gilt-framed bindings and gilt edges, full gilt cuts. In the corners of the covers three crowns, on the center of the covers crowned monogram CA. The spines a little faded, some covers have folded.

More appeared (ninth volume 1811). The only royal person who can come into question as owner is Carl (Karl) August (1768-1810), of Danish descent and in June 1809 elected Swedish crown prince. During a hussar exercise on the Kvidinge heath, he was hit, fell off his horse and died. Rumors that the Gustavians had in fact poisoned him led to the Fersen riots.

Not included in Sjögren, Swedish royal and princely book owner marks. The tapes were probably a gift from the academy to the newly appointed crown prince, probably never read, possibly not even handed over.
