Heliogabalus (or Elagabalus; actually Varius Avitus Bassianus and as emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus), was a Roman emperor 218 - 222. He was born about 203 in Emesa, Syria, the son of Sextus Varius Marcellus and Emperor Caracalla's cousin Julia Soaemias (that he would have been Caracalla's illegitimate son was a rumor spread to give him greater legitimacy to the throne).
