Description
Marcus Cocceius Nerva was the son of a wealthy Roman lawyer. His family had a tradition of holding high offices and he was a distant relative of Tiberius. Nerva lived as usual in his family and became a civil servant. He displayed an ability to always hold high positions despite the turbulence in Roman society. He helped Nero resist Piso's conspiracy in 65; he was co-consul with Vespasian in 71 and co-consul with Domitian in 90. When the assassination of Domitian became known, the Senate acted swiftly and made him emperor.
