Description

wood, partly colored painted/textile. Ship model of the three-masted galleon 'Wasa'. Commissioned by King Gustav II. Built by Adolf of Sweden in 1625 by the Skeppsgården shipyard. Equipped with 64 guns and a crew of 437 men, the ship was supposed to protect Sweden's religious and strategic interests towards Poland during the Thirty Years' War. On August 10, 1628, the ship capsized on its maiden voyage due to serious design errors and sank after about 1300 m. After being salvaged in 1961, the Wasa can now be seen restored in the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. HxW: approx. 76x91 cm.
