A German Eastern Front Medal.
Instituted on 24/5-1942, designed by Ernst Krause The medal was awarded to those who fought on the Eastern Front between 15/11-41 and 15/4-42.
The criteria alternated between 14 days of fire fighting, severely frostbitten, or 60 days of continuous duty. Female healthcare workers were also awarded the medal.
The back is decorated with the text Winterschlacht im Osten.
The ribbon of the medal was worn on the uniform in the buttonholes of the coat of arms.
It came to be referred to by the soldiers as the "Frozen Meat Medal".
