Composition, old art print, dimensions: 32 x 37 cm.
Serge Poliakoff (1900 – 1969) was a Russian painter and is still considered the most important representative of the "Nouvelle Ècole de Paris". After a sheltered childhood, he decided early on to flee to Paris on the trains of the Russian Revolution. There he spent almost his whole life.
At the beginning he still preferred figurative painting in the academic tradition such as landscapes and nudes, only to devote himself entirely to abstraction later – under the strong influence of Wassily Kandinsky.
First in grey-brown, then in luminous compositions, he put together asymmetrical color surfaces like a jigsaw puzzle, without attacking the balance of harmony. Poliakoff studied the mutual effect of the colors closely in order to achieve high-contrast but clear surfaces. Yellow, blue and red kept returning. In his late work he preferred the monochrome of the colors in his pictorial language. Poliakoff continued to work on the concept of abstract color painting he developed until his death.
Poliakoff took part twice in the documenta and the Venice Biennale. His work has been shown in the largest European and American museums in Europe.(Source: https://www.galerie-boisseree.com/de/artists/serge-poliakoff.html).
