As a young teenager, he was exposed to African-American music, jazz and blues, but was also inspired by folk music. When in the early 1960s he became a member of the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, formed in 1958, the group changed its name to The Animals. The group hit big in 1964 with their recording of "The House of the Rising Sun" which became a single in both the UK and the US. They became one of the main groups of the British Wave and had several other hit singles in the mid-1960s such as "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". He began a career as a solo artist in 1971 and has since released many studio albums. He appeared in 1983 in a brief reunion of The Animals' original line-up. Burdon is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Animals. When Rolling Stone magazine published a list of the 100 greatest singers of all time, Burdon was ranked 57th.
