Beautiful lamp produced by Spanish production house FASE in the 50s A classic design that will perfectly complement your desktop, while providing ambient lighting. Lamp measurements: width 60 cm, depth 30 cm, height 40.
Spanish lighting manufacturer Fase was founded in Madrid in 1964 by industrial designer Pedro Martin. Martin initially sold his self-made lamps in markets before successfully opening a factory in Torrejón de Ardoz on the outskirts of Madrid. In the 1970s, Fase was a major player in Spanish manufacturing, helping an economy then struggling with oil crises and a difficult transition to democracy. Fase has sold lighting in more than 32 countries for more than three decades, with the largest markets being the UK, France, Italy, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Canada and the United States. Despite Fase's commercial success, little information is available about the company and its history, and sources are often conflicting.
Fase's earliest designs are considered modern and feature unusual combinations of metals such as chrome and steel with marble and wood in a range of bright colors. The lamps could also often be moved by an intricate ball and socket joint system devised by Fase's early designers and which quickly became a trademark alongside the glass diffusers. Notable Fase designs include the Boomerang 64, Boomerang 2000, 520, Faro, and President—all believed to have been designed in the 1960s.
From the 1970s, Fase introduced Italian Modern and Bauhaus-inspired designs to Spanish audiences unfamiliar with the iconic styles of the 20th century due to the Franco era. Fase combined traditional materials such as wood with a modern aesthetic and also created many lamps in a completely modernist style. Lamps from this period include the Tharsis and Babilonia, both in chrome but with either one or two lamps, and the Arpón and Impala in stainless steel (all 1970s). Fase's lighting designers and workers remain largely anonymous, as a result that many lamps are falsely attributed to the Spanish manufacturer and there is a whole genre of "Bevel style" lighting such as lamps from Madrid-based lighting manufacturers Lupela, GEI (Gabinete Estudios Industriales), and Ma-Of, among others. Original Fase lamps can be identified by the company's name or logo, which is usually found on the lamp's base or plug.
In the 1980s, Fase began manufacturing halogen lamps. Although these lamps were very popular and new at the time, the break with tradition proved unsuccessful and ultimately contributed to the demise of the company.
