Leader of the Soviet Union 1985–1991 and its first and last executive president. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. In 1990, Gorbachev became the first executive president of the Soviet Union. His struggle for détente and openness earned him a good reputation in the West. While he became popular outside the Soviet Union (the Gorbi effect), criticism of him grew internally both from conservative communists and from pro-democracy advocates. He left the post of President of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991. Signed photo in postcard size.
