RMS Lusitania was a British passenger ship in the shipping company Cunard Line built in 1905-1906. When she was launched, it was the world's largest ship. In 1907 the Lusitania conquered the blue ribbon of the Atlantic, average speed 23.99 knots.
On her last voyage, the Lusitania left New York on May 1, 1915. On May 7, the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine (U-20) at the Old Head of Kinsale off Kinsale in Ireland. 1198 of the 1959 people on board died in the sinking. However, the ship was carrying not only passengers but also ammunition, which is the most debated explanation for the U-20's two fired torpedoes having such a powerful effect on this huge vessel. Diving on the ship has subsequently shown that cargo spaces with ammunition and weapons are intact. Ammunition lies in neat piles after wooden boxes have rotted away. A more likely explanation is hot steam boilers, which were exploded by the rushing cold sea water. #1 According to testimony, including that of the ship's commander, Captain Turner, and surviving passengers, the Lusitania was hit by a single torpedo. Only seconds later, a much more powerful explosion occurred. The ship capsized and went under only 18 minutes after the torpedoing. Even U-20's commander Captain Lieutenant Walter Schwieger is said to have stated and entered in the logbook that only one torpedo was fired.
Length of the ship approx. 188 cm.
