1104872. MANUSCRIPT. ALCHEMY. LAPIS PHILOSOPHORUM (THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE) 1624.

Description

Manuscript. Alchemy. A manuscript dated 1624 in a parchment band from the time with the initials E. T. H. and the date 1624 on front cover. It contains e.g. a. a text on the Lapis Philosophorum (Philosopher's Stone) and some other texts in alchemy which, according to a previous note on the inside of the front cover, must have been written by a Sigismund von Laubenheim ca. 1580. The texts are probably transcripts and are written alternately in Latin and in German. There are approx. 130 p. bound in a contemporary parchment band (approx.14 cm. x 9 cm) in purse style. Pages 70-111 are missing. In the text there are some illustrations showing instruments and possibly dosages. I have a feeling that the texts are written by slightly different hands.
The Philosopher's Stone is a fictional substance with miraculous properties. Alchemists of the Middle Ages believed that it could transform base metals into precious ones as well as cure all diseases and prolong life. Source Wikipedia.
I have not been able to locate Sigismund von Laubenheim. Maybe someone out there?

Condition

The band has darkened and is heavily stained. Parts of the insert have come off. The last two leaves, which are registers, have edge tears.
