Here we go again! Once the first Rust & Advertising auction was over and we saw how the signs from all over the country continued to pour in long after, we realized that it was not just a one-time event. It was the beginning of something bigger. The interest had lit a spark that would not go out, and now we are here ready to light it again – stronger and with even more soul.
But what is it about old advertising signs that grabs us so tightly, even now that we are doing it for the second time? From a historical perspective, they are still living documents of the times that tell the story of the evolution of advertising. From simple, handwritten slogans to artful prints that followed the development of technology. From a personal perspective, it is about that irresistible magic in the details: the playfully twisted texts that make us smile out loud, the solid craftsmanship that defies the years, and the bold colors that suddenly make our walls feel a little warmer and more alive.
The ravages of time have of course continued their silent work. The nasty rust has crept in in several places, leaving its characteristic patina and sometimes taking a chip of paint with it. But it is precisely that part that makes them so authentic and full of life. They bear traces of time, wear and tear and history.
