Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm presents a summer auction featuring, among other things, an extensive collection of prints by the artist and archipelago chronicler Roland Svensson.
Included in the collection are highly sought-after works such as “Sandhamnshålet,” “Röder utskärgård,” “Juninatt, Gillöga,” and “Vindgator,” along with the portfolios “Ännu ett skärgårdsår” ("Another Year in the Archipelago") and “Dagar i skärgård och annorstädes” ("Days in the Archipelago and Elsewhere").
Painter, printmaker, illustrator, cultural historian, geographer, and author Roland Svensson (1910–2003) enriched the way we see the Swedish archipelago. No one has captured the environment of the archipelago—with its boats, wildlife, and people—quite like he did.
When Roland Svensson was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy by Stockholm University during its centennial in 1978, the motivation read:
"The artist Roland Svensson has gained a recognized position as a painter, primarily with motifs from the Stockholm archipelago, but also with work extending to other coasts and oceans. In addition to his long-established reputation as an artist, Svensson has increasingly depicted various maritime environments through writing in a distinguished manner. His body of work includes accounts based on years of research from the Stockholm archipelago as well as from several island communities where life is largely shaped by the sea—such as Tristan da Cunha."
The auction also includes a section of nautical collectibles, ship models, maritime portraits, and marine-themed paintings and prints by artists such as Axel Sjöberg, Harald Lindberg, Jacob Hägg, Evert Lindfors, Gunnar Norrman, John Carlson, Harald Sallberg, Emil Ekman, and Olle Nordberg.
Ahoy!
