Arén’s artistic career began in earnest in 1937 when he enrolled at the Technical School. In the early 1940s, he studied under Isaac Grünewald and Fritiof Schüldt at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. During that decade, he also undertook study trips to Germany, Belgium, France, and Italy. However, it was not until 1953 that he held his first solo exhibition, showcasing his paintings at Konstnärshuset in Stockholm.
