This past spring, Stockholms Auktionsverk in Helsingborg cast a sharp spotlight on contemporary Finnish printmaking by presenting a theme dedicated to the evocative etchings of Kuutti Lavonen. Lavonen is a versatile artist, working not only with prints but also in painting and photography. He gained widespread recognition for his artistic embellishments in St. Olaf’s Church in Tyrvää in the early 2000s. However, his career began much earlier. In 1978, Lavonen enrolled at the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche in Urbino, Italy, before starting his studies two years later at the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of the Arts Helsinki, where he remained until 1984.
During his studies, Lavonen was already exhibiting his works, and today, the list of cities where his art has been displayed is impressively long. Now, as Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg once again focuses on his prints, we are reintroduced to Lavonen, the portrait artist. In 37 pieces, he demonstrates his exceptional craftsmanship. His works evoke nods to expressionist predecessors as well as much older masters from the Italian Renaissance. Lavonen’s art combines these historical influences into a concentrated essence of the best of art history.
Warmly welcome to Stockholms Auktionsverk Helsingborg!
