From simple vessels of wood and pewter to designer dinnerware in porcelain and stoneware, the dinner service has long been an integral part of the Nordic home. During the 18th century, interest grew in East India porcelain; imported to the Nordic countries, it inspired the region's emerging dinnerware production. Over time, manufacturers—notably in Sweden—developed their own distinct traditions, with Rörstrand (founded in 1726) and later Gustavsberg playing pivotal roles in shaping the design and aesthetic of these sets.
Unlike our recurring "The Set Table" auction, which focuses on creating magnificent table settings, the "Nordic Dinnerware" auction turns its attention to the dinnerware itself—those central objects that accompany us through everyday meals, festive occasions, and moments shared together. Here, different eras, materials, and styles converge, ranging from early sets to renowned Swedish classics and designs that still hold a natural place on our dining tables.
