The earliest pocket watches can be traced back as far as the 16th century. Over time, they would become the height of fashion, and the gentleman wishing to travel by steam locomotive during the 19th century would surely have checked the time using the pocket watch tucked into his waistcoat beneath the lapel of his coat.
Helsingborgs Auktionskammare presents both hunter-case watches, grandmother clocks, and watch cases. The latter appear in several different designs, and the majority of the watches are crafted in 14- and 18-carat gold. A French 18th-century example in brass with verge escapement stands out as an exquisite exception.
