The themed auction Swedish Colour Poetry of the 20th Century celebrates some of the most expressive and nuanced currents in Swedish painting. Here, vibrant landscapes, emotive portraits, elegant still lifes, and bold abstractions come together in a rich panorama of luminous, poetic, and atmospheric works.
Swedish 20th-century painting was shaped by the breakthrough of modernism, as artists explored the full expressive potential of colour. Over the course of the century, art moved between international influences and a deeply rooted Nordic sensibility. The auction features works by Gösta Adrian-Nilsson, Lena Cronqvist, Åke Göransson, Sigrid Hjertén, Axel Sjöberg, Gösta Sandels, Ragnar Sandberg and Lars Lerin, among many other significant artists. Together, they reflect an era in which colour was allowed to speak freely, powerfully, and with emotional depth.
We warmly invite you to explore the catalogue and take part in this auction—a vibrant tribute to Swedish 20th-century painting.
All works form part of a private collection, several of which were shown in the exhibition The Return of the Gothenburg Colourists to Falbygden at Falbygden Museum in the spring of 2025. The collection is divided into several themed auctions, while the remaining parts will be published by Stockholms Auktionsverk in Gothenburg during the spring.
