For decades, K.G. Nilson has been a cornerstone of Swedish graphic art. His vividly colorful works, featuring geometric shapes, are instantly recognizable today in galleries, museums, and auctions alike. Nilson’s artistic journey began at Valand Art School in Gothenburg in the early 1960s, followed by a brief stint in Paris, and five years of study at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. His time at these institutions nurtured a deep interest in theory, which led him to publish the book Färglära in 1982, exploring the principles of color.
Over the years, Nilson’s artistic style has evolved, simplifying impressions of maps and buildings into playful compositions featuring geometric forms. At Stockholms Auktionsverk, you can enjoy 32 of his pieces, ranging from early etchings to more recent works like Periskop, a cityscape in confetti-like colors. This particular piece intriguingly balances between playful and eerie, depending on the viewer’s interpretation of a small but significant detail within the composition.
