The history of dolls is a winding tale that spans millennia, weaving through both castles and cottages. Some trace the earliest dolls to ancient Egypt, while other sources point to a discovery in Siberia as the oldest known example. One of the earliest preserved dollhouses hails from Nuremberg, dating back to 1639. Likely, it represented a miniature upper-class home for a privileged child to play with nearly 400 years ago.
At Stockholms Auktionsverk Magasin 5, the curators pick up this story in the late 19th century, inviting us to explore the doll-making artistry of the early 20th century in a themed auction featuring around 30 carefully selected dolls, along with a variety of dollhouse furniture.
Many of the dolls in this theme are presented with detailed information about their makers, shedding light on the strong connections to Germany, which led the doll-making industry over a century ago.
