This was back in the days when explorers (yes, it was almost always men, adorned with mustaches and/or beards) could board a ship to venture into some inhospitable jungle or windswept icy island to tread ground that had never been trodden before. And this time, his name was Ferdinand Krokisius. He was a commander captain, and on a spring day in 1883, he boarded the German corvette Marie, which took him to a point just off the east coast of South America, where he picked up members of a German polar expedition. As a token of gratitude, he was honored with a mountain on South Georgia Island named after him - Mount Krokisius. From there, he set off to New Guinea, Samoa, and Australia before stepping onto German soil again in February 1886.
And from this adventurous voyage, Stockholm's Auction House in Sickla can now present 15 exotic items of highly varied nature. Perhaps the most personal of these is Ferdinand Krokisius' logbook filled with hand-drawn maps, drawings, and photographs. But one might argue that the magnificent shield from New Guinea stands out even more. Shields of this type are exceedingly rare, and to see something similar, one would have to visit the British Museum. Alongside an English saber adorned with gilded brass fittings, an ivory handle, and a scabbard with a lion mask, a range of more unusual weapons is also on display, such as a war club and several still very sharp spears.
Warmly welcome to Stockholm's Auction House in Sickla and this exciting collection from a bygone era.
