Torkel Dahlstedt - Curiosity on repeat

Curiosity is a fruitful aptitude. Without it, there is no development.

One of artist Torkel Dahlstedt’s primary driving forces has always been an irrepressible curiosity and a desire to explore new fields of knowledge. This has led to a career spanning painting, graphic art, sculpture, relief, and textiles, as well as roles as a Creative Director and an award-winning product designer.

"I will never be the kind of person who does the same thing twice," he states emphatically.

Beyond life experience itself, Torkel Dahlstedt’s formal education includes language studies in Madrid and Paris—followed by a decade spent as a language teacher—graphic art studies under Harry van Kuyk in Nijmegen (the Netherlands), painting and sculpture studies with Idun Lovén in Stockholm and Claudio Palla in Pietrasanta (Italy), and design studies in Zurich.

He considers Velázquez and Goya to be peerless artists, and suggests that spending a significant amount of time at the Prado Museum in Madrid is an excellent way to mature—both as an artist and as a human being.

Torkel Dahlstedt grew up surrounded by art and literature. In his own work, he has frequently explored specific themes, often linked to observations of contemporary society. The writings of Harry Martinson—Aniara in particular—have always served as a source of inspiration. For some time now, Torkel Dahlstedt has been working on a series of collages centered on the theme of the "scream"—a commentary on the often boisterous, attention-seeking tone that permeates today’s communication channels.

Torkel Dahlstedt has no desire to appear as a "Superman"; on the contrary, he prefers his art to speak for itself. Yet, Superman—the character—serves as a highly topical motif for several of the works featured in this auction. Dahlstedt often works with paraphrases as a way to further develop already powerful artworks. In this instance, he has taken Roman Cieslewicz’s 1968 Cold War illustration “CCCP USA Superman,” imbued it with a cataclysmically explosive quality, and ensnared the heavyweights of the global power order in the chains of captivity.

There are no winners in war, Torkel Dahlstedt observes.
