When Chinese porcelain reached Western Europe during the 16th century, European potters tried in vain to produce a ware of comparable quality. In Holland they tried with blue and white faience, and in Germany they tried with porcelain, but seldom achieved the technical and artistic quality of the ceramics of the Far East. Thus, the craftsmanship of Asian works of art has often been superior to that of European counterparts. The images seen on Chinese and Japanese porcelain were completely new to Europeans, which feed the fascination and consumption of Far Eastern wares. Even in the 20th century, a great wave of enthusiasm for the ceramic art of Asia swept over Europe, during which time Scandinavian diplomats, collectors and scholars created collections which have remained largely intact.
Crafoord Auctions Stockholm are proud to present this season’s Asian Sale. The auction includes Chinese and Korean porcelain, jades, Indian and Nepalese sculpture, bronzes, silver, Japanese lacquer and lapidary arts. One of the highlights is a bronze Budai from the Qianlong period from the collection of the diplomat Hans Olwaeus. Another important piece from the same collection is a rare ’Ode to the Red Cliff’ vase from the Kangxi period, decorated on two sides with fine and extensive calligraphy. The ten-piece gilt copper libation and incense set also stands out in its rarity.
