This is the story of a man and his passion for history, art, and culture. His name was Kazimierz Julian Czerwiński, and he belonged to the noble family Herbu Lubicz, whose distinctive coat of arms has followed the family through generations. By profession he was a lawyer, but after long days filled with statutes, regulations, and court proceedings, he transformed in the evenings into a numismatist—a coin collector with an eye for detail and deep knowledge of his field.
To Kazimierz Julian Czerwiński, the coins were far more than simple means of payment from ancient cultures. In these small minted beauties, he saw echoes of bygone eras manifest in stories of historical events and individual human destinies.
And now that his collection is to be sold, it is Stockholms Auktionsverk—the world’s oldest auction house—that is handling the work. Their specialist in the field has carefully catalogued the 52 lots, and we now stand before an equal number of high-karat gold coins originating from the USA and Russia, but also from Austria-Hungary and Poland. Connoisseurs will quickly note that these are sought-after specimens, largely from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.
For Czerwiński, the coins symbolized independence, strength, and security—values he himself held in high regard throughout his life. And it was his wish, when he handed them over to his grandchildren, that one day they might be of help in troubled times. That wish is now coming true.
