A relative has provided the following interesting information:
Montague married Amelia Mary Moulton-Barrett at Sidbury Church Nr. Sidmouth on the 17 September 1897, after a long courtship. Because Monty served in India both he and Amelia lived there after their marriage. They eventually settled in Torquay at Torwood House, they subsequently moved to Livonia at Arcot just outside Sidmouth. They are both buried at the Sidmouth Cemetry.
Monty had a sister called Alice and a brother. Monty was born on the 18th February, 1856 in Ilfracombe Devon, he died on the 13th May, 1931.
Monty in retirement was involved with the local branch of the British Legion. His interests were fishing and shooting. He was made the Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Devon. His decorations were C.B.E., C.M.G., D.S.O.
Monty was recalled to serve in WW1., with his Regiment - the 2"d Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment. He was in fact beyond retirement age, his final rank was Major General. The Regiment is famous for its heroic resistance at Bois be Buttes on the 27h May 1918., and it was awarded the Croix de Guerre. In the face of an intense bombardment, the few survivors of the battalion, though isolated, and without hope of assistance, held on to their trenches north of the river and fought to the last.
Montague (Monty) Before he married he served in the Boer War ,and was mounted, his horse was called Tinker sadly it was killed, but there is still a relic of this brave animal in the shape of a hoof, mounted on a silver shoe.
Monty was later made the Military Governor of Ladysmith during his tour of duty in Africa.
Generally good condition, some marking and folding.

Lawrences present their Autumn Militaria, Medals & Coins Auction, a remarkable three-day event featuring over two thousand lots. The sale perfectly reflects the auction house’s reputation for “collections of collections,” bringing together extensive groups of military artefacts, rare medals, historic weapons, and fine coins.
Among the highlights is a Chinese Gold Sycee Ingot, which is something rather special. Gold has been much in the headlines recently, and there is plenty of interesting gold to choose from in the auction, but few pieces of ‘sunken treasure’ are as exciting as the gold bar from the Geldermalsen. These bars are incredibly rare survivors, and to hold one and wonder at its manufacture, history, and journey is quite something.
The sale also includes one of the largest assortments of cap badges ever offered by Lawrences, complemented by an impressive selection of enamel badges and military medals. Collectors will also discover two exceptional silver swords from a distinguished private collection, as well as notable numismatic treasures including a Victorian Gothic Crown.
