Description
A fascinating collection of items acquired by a Rev J R M Stephens whist working as a Missionary in the Belgian Congo in the late 19thc/early 20thc. Including a tribal wooden stool inset with brass studs and coins (39cms diameter, 29cms high), a large and heavy bronze hinged ring anklet (used as currency, 17.5cms diameter), a carved tribal ancestor figure (52.5cms high), a carved hardwood paddle (173cms long), and a carved wooden spear with sheets of metal to the shaft and mirror inserts (124cms long). With a letter of provenance from the Baptist Missionary Society from 1894, and a photograph of the Rev Stephens with some local children in 1902.
Condition
Stool, small chip and wear around the rim, crack across the base and some old worm holes to the base.
Figure, base is cracked and loose in parts, crack running down the body and various other surface cracks, ear missing, chip to the top of the head, cracks and repairs to the legs.
Currency ring anklet, hinges don't open at the moment, some marks and small dents in places
Paddle, top of the paddle is chipped, small chips and wear around the edge of the blade
Spear, metal sheets have some dents and bits missing in places, spear end is cracked and also dented at the end.
