258. 3418646. A FRENCH GLASS, SILVER AND PARCEL-GILT DEVOTIONAL MEDALLION SECOND HALF 17TH CENTURY.

Description

having a zwischengold panel depicting Mary and Jesus to one side the other depicting St Theresa of Avila, and having a silver pendant inscribed "EX DONO REG" and initialled "AL", 6.5cm high

Provenance - Brian Watson Glass Collection, Christie's 8th March 2011 lot 198, Christie's 6th July 1993,

Note - It is interesting to note that while in exile in France, Mary Modena, wife of James II befriended a Nun named Anne-Louise at the monastery of Chaillot where she had a room from 1689-1712. Although the pendant on the present medallion probably dates from the 18th century, it is possible that it was added on the strength of a verbal tradition dating from the end of the 17th century.

Condition

general marks and wear as expected with age.
