52. 2999795. A RUSSIAN 1756 PATTERN GRENADIER'S SWORD FROM THE REIGN OF CATHERINE THE GREAT.

Description

With a 67.5cm broad fullered blade with sharpened edge and etched in cyrillic with initials 'ERII' beneath a Crown. With a brass hilt with double shell guard and grip, the 'D' shaped bow stamped to both sides with inspectors marks, a further inspection mark to the blade. 93cm overall.
Catherine the Greats reign from 1762-1796 saw numerous conflicts including The Seven Years War, the Pomeranian War against Sweden, wars against the Turks, Circassians, Poles and others. It is also likely that such a sword could also have been used during the Napoleonic Wars.
See 'Russian Sidearms, Polearms & Bayonets' by A.N. Kulinsky, 2001. p176, N67.

Condition

Pitting and degradation to blade in places and very end of point lacking, rubbing and light dents to brass guard and grip.
