As a 14-year-old, Thoman started as an apprentice with the court sculptor Sjöberg in Stockholm and from 1781-1790 he practiced with the castle sculptor Pehr Ljung. In 1790 Thoman was employed by Duke Fredrik Adolf to carry out sculpting work at Tullgarn Castle and in 1796 he was appointed court sculptor to Duke Karl, a position he held until 1818.

The Egyptianizing style quickly gained a foothold also among Swedish craftsmen, such as the chair maker Ephraim Ståhl, the sculptors Pehr Ljung, Gustaf Adolf Klint and Ernst Philip Thoman, the mirror manufacturers Jonas Frisk and Pehr Gustaf Bylander. The style was first introduced in royal environments, where Duke Karls Rosersberg is an excellent example in this context. Through his interest in mystical orders, the symbolic host of ancient Egypt was perfectly suited to create the right atmosphere around the duke. As early as the summer of 1800 and the following year, Ephraim Ståhl delivered larger sets of pod armchairs with sculpted sphinx heads in the armrests. The sphinx motif is undoubtedly the most popular in the arts and crafts, where lamps, candelabras, chandeliers, furniture and mirrors are characterized by the Egyptianizing style. Interest in Egypt already existed in the country in the 18th century, when Duke Karl's mother, Queen Lovisa Ulrika, had a mummy with a coffin acquired, which had been improved and provided with pseudo-hieroglyphs by antique dealers of the time. The imaginative sarcophagus was composed as the centerpiece of the Naturaliekabinett's north wall at Drottningholm Palace, by the architect Jean Eric Rehn.

Condition

The highlight of the Swedish classic department is Carl Larsson’s Garden Scene from Marstrand. The painting is Swedish summer personified and an exquisite example of Larsson’s watercolour painting at its best. Several other en plein air painters from the late 19th Century are represented, such as Bruno Liljefors, Frits Thaulow and Per Ekström. The latter’s atmospheric painting Summer landscape, Chantilly, allows the viewer to get up close to nature. The auction also includes a unique collection of works by the animal sculptor Arvid Knöppel, which show his versatility and skillfulness as a sculptor and illustrator. The notable artist Axel Törneman is also represented with a larger collection of works. The painting Archer, depicting his son Algot, is perhaps the auction’s most colourful masterpiece.

The international department presents works by artists such as Emelie Preyer and the French symbolist Henri Martin alongside the artist Bartholomeus Sprangers, who was one of the first artists to immerse himself in the 16th Century Mannerism, which can be seen in the auction’s beautiful work Allegory of the Goddess of Victory. The Old Master department also features a portrait depicting Count and Major General Leonard Johan Wittenberg by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl, executed in 1677, only three years after Stockholms Auktionsverk was founded in 1674!
