10. 1977775. CANDELABRAR, a pair of high-class Late Gustavian Stockholm works, possibly made by Eric Talén (master under the girdle maker's office in Stockholm 1813-1839).

Description

For three candles each, convertible to candelabra, matted and polished burnished gilt bronze, foot with palmette decoration against piqued base, smooth column with palmette-covered base, crowning Egyptian caryatid bust with paired serpents, candlesticks with rostra staves and eagles and palmettes respectively, height 40 cm LITERATURE: Bo Vahlne : The redecoration of Rosersberg Castle 1797-1818, Stockholm 1988, page 126, compare lampposts with tapeworms in the Guard Room at Rosersberg Castle Elsebeth Welander-Berggren: Antikt, Stockholm 1989, page 60, compare candelabra made in St. Petersburg Jan von Gerber: Gilded bronzes under empire, Västerås 1991, page 44f, compare sconces for gas made for master brewer Brandelius in the form of winged mythical animals The high-class candelabras appear in a few different versions where some have fixed candle arms, while others are convertible to candlesticks with loose candle arms, like the one in the auction. The origin of the spectacular model probably stems from St. Petersberg and the workshop of the bronze caster Andrei Schreiber. Several decorative elements such as the base plate and the winged mythical beasts appear in candelabras, candlesticks and sconces made by Schreiber.

During the first quarter of the 19th century, the exchange between Stockholm and St. Petersburg was great among the craftsmen, several Swedish journeymen visited the Russian city during their education, on the way to becoming masters in their guild. Through archival material, we know that in 1801 the beltmaker's journeyman Eric Talén traveled to St. Petersburg, two years later Johan Ekman made the same trip to the Russian capital. In 1815, the brothers Reinhold Fredric and Johan Bernhard Lindroth took their journeyman's exams with their father, Reinhold Fredric Lindroth d.ä, and then traveled to St. Petersburg to learn their profession. The presence of the candelabra type in Sweden makes it likely that one of the journeymen who trained in St. Petersburg brought models home to Stockholm and started their own domestic production of these lighting tools. In terms of time, Eric Talén is a possible manufacturer of the candelabra, when he won the championship in Stockholm in 1813, after the years in St. Petersburg.

The art department shows paintings by masters active as early as the 16th century. Among the furniture we find cabinets, chairs and tables that are in direct dialogue with ancient temple aesthetics.
