ALONG WITH: Unknown artist (19th century). Portrait depicting Erik Flodin, wearing blue coat, harness and ring collar. Oil on canvas, approx. 77 x 60 cm. The portrait depicts Erik Flodin in his younger days.
Erik Flodin (died 1714), was a second captain in the Västmanland regiment and participated in the Great Nordic War (1700-1713). He became, among other things, captured in Tönning (Schleswig-Holstein), when the fortress under Field Marshal Magnus Stenbock was forced to capitulate on May 6, 1713. The entire regiment ended up in Danish captivity and was disbanded, but was reinstated in Sweden the same year and Flodin was already released in 1714, the same year he died. There is no information about his year of birth.
Flodin was married to Ingeborg Adlerstierna (1685-1775), daughter of Sven Löfman (1645-1708, ennobled Adlerstierna), in her second marriage. They had a son, Sven-Eric Flodin, who was married to medalist Daniel Hessling's daughter (possibly Daniel may have been involved in the design of the book given the quality of the pictures).
In Krigsarkivet's portrait collections (Armén's portrait collection) both portraits are depicted, reportedly belonging to S. Sparre's collections (probably Baron Sixten Knut Benjamin Axelsson Sparre (1873 - 1931), born in Lindesberg, lieutenant in the Västmanland regiment.
Daniel Haesling (also Häsling or Hessling), born 1707 in Östergötland, died 1746 in Saint Petersburg, was a Swedish medal engraver. Haesling was apprenticed to the medal engraver Johann Carl Hedlinger in Stockholm. In a short time he made such rapid progress in medal making that he was able to oversee the mint during Hedlinger's trip to Italy in 1726-1728. After Hedlinger's return, he set out in 1729 on a study trip, but did not get further than Hamburg, where he was offered the position of the bank's engraver in 1730. In addition, he carried out works for the princely houses in Germany as well as for the Danish and Polish courts. In 1745 he became an Imperial Russian medalist and moved to Saint Petersburg. Among his few Swedish works is the obverse of a medal for Gabriel Stierncrona in 1724. (Wikipedia.) PROVENANCE AND LENGTH OF OWNERSHIP derived in family generations from the creation of the portrait and the book until they came into the possession of the Ahlström family.
