Large 8vo in a later (possibly late 19th century) light brown half morocco binding with gilt spine text and lavishly rich spine gilt as well as marbled covers and endpapers. Famous for his 27 full-page woodcuts (one double-sided). With two woodcuts on the title page. (III) leaves, 310 leaves + 27 full-page woodcuts of which one is double-sided.

The famous Renaissance chef Bartolomeo Scappi worked in the Vatican kitchen under Pius IV. The work contains approx. 1,000 recipes from Renaissance cuisine and the famous woodcuts depict everyday life in 16th-century haute cuisine, and here is also the first ever depiction of a fork. The work was first published in 1570.

Condition

The front piece in the form of an engraved portrait is missing. The title page is invited. Older neat handwritten leaf bound before the title page with notes about the book in French. Title page a little sunny. Water stain in the upper part of the first 25 leaves. Some sunny and slightly stained margins, but surprisingly fresh inlay. Woodcuts in very good condition.
