D'APRES DE MANNEVILLETTE, JEAN BAPTISTE. Flat map that comprend l'Isle de Ceylan, une partie des cotes de Malabar et de Coromandel. Paris c. in 1810.
Engraved map on thick paper, c. 510x680 mm. Centrefold as issued, left part (corner) with fold, small burn spot. French chart of Ceylon and southern part of India. This is the smaller of two versions and issued later with additions.
D' Apres de Mannevillette (1707-1780), French sailor and hydrographer. His Atlas Le Neptune Oriental (containing only 22 charts) was published in 1745. During a voyage to China in 1728, he succeeded in correcting the latitudes of many places using new instruments. Back in France he devised a plan to correct and publish all existing maps of the route to China: the Red Sea, the coasts of India, Malaya, the northern parts of Indonesia, Indochina and China.
