Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) pioneered the first commercial polar route from Europe to the Far East in 1957, flying from Copenhagen to Tokyo over the North Pole. This “Viking Route” significantly reduced flight times and established a more efficient link between Europe and Asia, according to Cision News. The route was not without its challenges, requiring specialized navigation techniques and equipment due to the unique conditions of the Arctic.
