Los Caprichos de Goya, facsimile edition of Editorial Planeta. Limited edition.
4438093. Los Caprichos de Goya, facsimile edition of Editorial Planeta. Limited edition.

Description

Copy number 256/2988.
Composed of two volumes with eighty prints that make up Francisco de Goya's Caprichos.
Box: 52.5x38x12 cm.

Los Caprichos de Goya is considered by experts to be the most significant work of the Aragonese painter's side as an engraver and is limited to 2,998 copies; this copy being number 256. This work, consisting of 80 whims, has been collected, for the first time, in a facsimile by the Planeta publishing house and the University of Zaragoza. For the creation of this luxury edition, the collection kept in the library of the University of Zaragoza has been taken as a model, the most important in the world because it is the first edition, printed and supervised by Goya himself and, in addition, it is one of the only three copies in the world that incorporate manuscripts into each engraving with comments by Goya. Based on these 80 whims, a special edition of the work has been made by hand, each copy being a unique work. The work is contained in a case made of cotton fabric in which all there is is the first engraving in the collection, Self-Portrait. Inside this case there is still a second of protection, including the 80 copies, which simulate a skin on whose back the inscription Caprich de Goya appears, “since Goya didn't fit the word caprichos, he left it in caprich.” As for the content, a reproduction has been made in the “original size, respecting the original colors, lines and stains”. A stochastic plot has been used that has allowed the plot points to be suppressed, making the reproduction more faithful. This fidelity has been possible thanks to the collection of the University of Zaragoza, “the only one that maintains extreme cleanliness.” As a curiosity, it is worth looking at sheet number 45 on which the central witch appears completely clean compared to subsequent reproductions in which a “scratch from the nose to the chin caused by the reproductions” appears. The edition is completed with a study book in which different experts in engravings comment and explain the avatars of the collection and the different interpretations. In addition, the plates appear one by one, complemented by the preparatory drawings found in the Prado Museum in Madrid.
