KARL AXEL PEHRSON - Master of Imagination and Form
Crafoord Auktioner Stockholm presents a collection of works by artist and graphic artist Karl Axel Pehrson.
KAP was one of the 1947 Men of the Year, a group of artists who participated in the 1947 exhibition “Ung kunst” at Galleri Färg och Form in Stockholm. Other contributors included Lennart Rodhe, Olle Bonnér, Pierre Olofsson, Lage Lindell, Uno Vallman and Randi Fisher, who would later be called Concretists.
From the late 1940s until the 1960s, Pehrson used the concrete and abstract design language such as the auction's “Nocturne” from 1954 and “Polonäs” printed in 1960.
The feeling for form was an essential feature of the artistry, which over time was filled with color and flaunting imagination. But it was during the 1970s and 1980s that Pehrson blossomed into both precise and detailed motifs of unknown, made-up animals and plants.
Ulf Linde, who wrote the book “Karl Axel Pehrson”, points out that the artist united several traditions in his painting. One tradition comes from the 17th-century landscape painter Claude Lorrain, others mention inspirers such as the French naivist Henri Rousseau and the English landscape painter Marianne North.
“The exciting thing about Karl Axel Pehrson's magnificent tropical gardens is that the real and the imaginary go hand in hand. The lesson here is mixed with a spear-like sense of humour. The pictorial can at the same time be perceived as a pattern of color and shape. As Ulf Linde once aptly put it, every mysterious entity in Pehrson's pictorial world is a find, not an invention but a discovery. It is the kind of art that ages gently and beautifully, like cherished dreams faded by time.“(Svenska Dagbladet, 11 Aug 2011).
Karl Axel Pehrson has also designed the “Guldbaggen” award, which the Swedish Film Institute awards every year.
