WHEN SKÅNE DISAPPEARED, a documentary depiction of the snow disaster in Skåne in winter 1979 by Torbjörn Andersson & Lars Fredell & Per Lindström
Description
Glued book.
The word “disaster” is sometimes used too casually in our mass media, but when it comes to describing the severe weather that literally crippled Skåne for weeks to come, the word is quite appropriate.
The Scanian winter of 1979 will go down in history as one of the worst in human memory. The first storm pulled in over the landscape with snow and gale-force winds over the New Year holidays. It was followed by several, consecutive snowstorms.
The snow has buried Skåne. Houses, roads, vehicles and railways disappeared in the snow masses. Villages and towns were completely isolated for several days. In rural areas, people had to wait for weeks for roads to become navigable. Almost superhuman efforts by military, fire brigade, road crew, police and volunteers were required to save people and animals not only from the snow but also from the harsh cold.
Expressen journalists Torbjörn Andersson, Lars Fredell and Per Lindström, who were themselves at the centre of the disaster, have in this book documented the snow disaster in text and pictures.
It has become a book/picture collage showing what it looked like “when Skåne disappeared”.
A book to save. And bring out, when the speech falls on “remember the winter of 1979?”
30x21cm.
