At the beginning of her career, her works were often dark with national romantic tone.

Her paintings suddenly contain strong colors and rapid brushstrokes. This style she developed until her death in 1934.
Ester Almqvist settled in Lund in the late 1910s. There, her friendship with another Lund neighbor, Tora Vega Holmström, was strengthened.
In 1933, several female artist friends including Siri Derkert, Mollie Faustman and Vera Nilsson organized an exhibition of Almqvist's watercolors at the legendary Galleri Färg och Form. The year after her death in 1935, with the initiative of Tora Vega Holmström, a memorial exhibition was organized at the Skånska Konstmuseet in Lund. In the same year, a memorial exhibition was also shown in Malmö and more exhibitions in Stockholm and Brussels followed.
