Agapetus II, Pope 946-955. Bulla of Agapetus II. Published by Professor Carl Lundius in Uppsala in 1703 as proof that Sweden was right in a border dispute with Denmark and Norway that originated in 1060. (Published in Uppsala, 1701). Folio in a later muted cardboard binding with red marbled cover. It was discovered quite quickly that this papal bull was a pure forgery added to give Sweden an advantage in the border dispute. It was first thought that the forger was Carl Lundius, but it has since been concluded that it was a priest in Hedemora named Nils Rabenius. He collected manuscripts, which he occasionally forged. Nils Ahnlund has led in evidence that Rabenius was likely the author of the false papal bull of 954, Agapetus bulla (published in 1701 by Professor Carolus Lundius). He was also guilty of the falsification of the so-called Peder Swart's episcopal chronicle for the diocese of Västerås as well as a speech attributed to Johan III from 1588. He also improved his own family lineage by deriving it to fictitious persons of the so-called "Rabbesläkten". Title page missing. 48 p. + Prolegomena, 18 p.
Band in good condition. Title page missing. The inlay consistently layer stained.
