Description

Red-figured, ovoid form, trefoil-shaped mouth, obverse with seated satyr, holding a phialae and a torch, to left a maenad holding a kantharos and a situla, ovate and meander border, details raised in white, base with signature in ink "Gunnar W Lundberg" height 24 cm PROVENANCE: Art historian Gunnar W. Lundberg (1903-1986), probably purchased in Paris in the 1930s Gunnar W. Lundberg received a licentiate in philosophy in 1931 and studied at the Sorbonne, the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Paris. He was the founder and director of the Institut Tessin in Paris from 1933 and cultural attaché at the Swedish embassy there from 1946. He was curator at several Swedish exhibitions in Paris 1937–63, established a Bernadotte museum in Pau in 1951, was chairman of the Societé des amis du Musée Bernadotte, board member of the Societé de l'histoire de l'art française. He published the Bulletin historique du Royal Suédois 1938–54 (with André Desfeuilles) and the Bulletin du Musée Bernadotte from 1956 (with Françoise Debaisieux). He became an honorary doctor of philosophy in Uppsala in 1972 and a member of the Royal Scythian Society in 1977.
