Description
Tessin, Carl Gustaf, count, ambassador, councilor etc., (1695-1770). An old man's letter to a young man prints I-II. 2 parts in 1 vol. Printed at Lars Salvius, Stockholm, 1756. Large 8vo in a contemporary brown leather binding with gilt spine text and gilt spine decoration and marbled cuts. Illustrated with 6 engraved vignettes, 5 of which pasted in. (XVI), 344 pages + (II), 382 pages.
This is the first collected edition of Carl Gustaf Tessin's letter to Prince Gustav. The letters Tessin wrote to his student, the future Gustav III, he published in 1751 in a limited edition with the title "An old man's letter to a young print". The present compilation edition with both collections became very popular. In the letters, Tessin teaches his mentee everything from culture and business to how a kingdom should be managed and how smallpox vaccination should be conducted successfully.
Condition
The band is edged and stained, but well cohesive. The insert is fairly consistent with so-called offsetting, i.e. imprints from opposite sides, sometimes significantly. Some bearing stains. Older signature on the title page. Small paper loss in the upper margin of the front cover without loss of text.
