Olof Rudbeck the Younger, born March 15, 1660 in Uppsala, died March 23, 1740 in Uppsala, was a Swedish natural historian and linguist, professor of medicine and rector of Uppsala University. A pioneer in botany and ornithology, Rudbeck was knighted in 1719. In 1695, at Charles XI's command, he undertook a journey to Lapland, a journey he intended to describe in a work, Lapponia illustrata, of which only the first of several planned parts was published, when the manuscript and its working notes were destroyed in the great fire in Uppsala 1702.
